About the event
Join us for a programme of richly melodic 19th—and 20th-century tone poems from the Czech Republic, Wales, and Russia, alongside the sweeping romance of the second violin concerto by American composer Florence Price – only rediscovered in 2009. Tchaikovsky’s much-loved Romeo and Juliet fantasy overture forms the romantic heart of the evening. Grace Williams harks back to Welsh folk tunes, giving a synchrony with the evocation of place and home in Smetana’s Ma Vlast. Similarly, Florence Price’s music roots itself in the African-American Spiritual tradition of her home.
